Product Trial Download
WEB EXPERIENCE, AUTODESK
View Site
Software trials allow our users to evaluate which product is best for them. We were tasked to re-design this experience so trial downloads are easily accessible.
Goals:
- Increase number of trial downloads
- Streamline the process
- Set expectations
- Provide getting-started information
The Problem
The process of getting a trial required users to go through many steps before they can access the download. Users are taken to a new page each step, which increases potential drop-off points.
The Solution
Combine all steps to into a light box. This removes the need for additional pages, redirects, and minimizes potential drop-off rates.
This solution is page-independent and can be accessible from any download link or page. This also maintains a consistent download experience across all web properties.
Visual Design
Trials Download Lightbox
This is initiated after clicking on a download link or button. We lead with the product logo & name so users know which product they are downloading.
New content and instructions will appear once you complete a previous step. Users can restart the process by clicking the link above.
Sign-in & Create Account
The Autodesk Account was developed by another team, so their module came with a slightly different design aesthetic (button style, color links, etc.).
After Download Starts
Because trial files are large, download times can vary depending on internet connection.
Initially, we wanted to use screenshots of browser UI to show where users might locate their download. However, that was not a manageable solution since there are many browsers out there and future updates could change their UI.
Instead we used a playful illustration to help to set expectations. A link to the help center and additional product info are available to get users started while their trial downloads.
What's Next
Analytics
Actively monitor web analytics to identify if there are any drop-offs during the new download process.
Mobile Solution
Trials are downloadable only on desktops and currently, there isn’t a solution for mobile users. We hope to allow mobile users to email a direct download link to themselves and offer recommendations on any related mobile apps.
